Adding your website to search engines and directories before knowing your best keywords is an exercise in futility. Likewise, if you haven't done everything you can to make your site "search engine friendly", you might just as well be writing your url down on a little scrap of paper, crumpling it up and tossing it in the general direction of the search engines
The first three steps are:
1. Keyword Analysis
Without knowing what keywords will get you the most amount of targeted viewers, you can waste a lot of your time for very little return.
This is the very first thing I provide and it helps me to find a focus for your promotions.
2. Search Engine Optimization
Once you know what keywords you should be using for maximum effect, you need to know how to utilize those keywords within the copy of your website's text, its meta tags, and all the little added extras that can give you that slight advantage over your competition. It's also very important to know if your website is using techniques that might actually block the search engines from finding and adding your site to their databases!
3. Search Engine Submissions
Submitting your site to the search engines and directories is certainly important - but without the two steps above, it simply won't accomplish much. (How far can you throw?)
When your webmaster has made the requested changes in step #2, I submit your site to the search engines and directories - both the top few, and the country-specific and/or topic specific-locations around the world.
